Caller Eleven Wants to Know Why Distance Makes Everything Sound Better
A caller asks why someone far away always sounds like a better song, and Ines gives a fond, suspicious answer.

Caller Eleven phoned in sounding like someone who had rehearsed a speech and then forgotten the first line. Her question, put plainly: why does a man two time zones away sound so much more charming than the one who used to sit across from her at dinner? Same voice, same jokes, she swears. Only now there's a delay on the line and a little ocean in the audio, and suddenly every sentence arrives like a gift.
I laughed, low and not unkindly, because I know this trick. Distance is the best producer in the business. It rolls off the harsh edges, adds a touch of reverb, and fades out every argument about whose turn it was to pick the restaurant. Anything that travels that far arrives with the dust brushed off. Of course he sounds like a late-night record. He's been mastered by geography.

But I don't want to be only a cynic about it, because there's a truth tucked in there. When someone is far, we listen harder. We lean into the speaker. We catch the breath before the laugh and the half-second pause before goodnight. Closeness lets us stop paying attention, and distance makes us pay it all back with interest. The voice didn't improve. Your ears did.
So tonight's record is a long, shimmering thing, a vocalist recorded in one city and a string section recorded in another, stitched together so cleanly you'd swear they shared a room. It's my favorite lie in the catalogue. Every note sounds like it's leaning toward the next one across a wide, beautiful gap.
My verdict for Caller Eleven: enjoy the lovely distortion, but test it. Plan the dinner. Hear him say your name in a room with no delay and see if it still lands. If it does, you've found something rare. If it doesn't, you've still had a magnificent playlist out of it. Whichever way it goes, keep the dial warm, and find more of my voice waiting on TheFriend.
